Tour Historic Philadelphia Day Into Night

A Variety Of Tour Options Keep Visitors On The Go From Dawn To Dusk

Visitors to Historic Philadelphia will find countless options for exploring Historic Philadelphia and its connections to the nation’s early history—whether it’s by land, by sea, by bus or by foot. Early risers can spend the day exploring every inch of America’s most historic square mile, and night owls can do the same by joining tours that feature high-tech storytelling, behind-the-scenes action and even spirits from beyond.

Best of all, thanks to an intensive three-week training course for storytellers and Colonial interpreters, visitors can be assured that the history they are hearing is accurate. Each guide and re-enactor employed by Historic Philadelphia, Inc., the group responsible for staffing the 13 storytelling benches, tours and other daily programs in and around Independence Mall, completes a 100-hour training program at The Benstitute to assure they are providing the most accurate, interactive, memorable and engaging experience possible for visitors. Here’s a look at the many different ways to tour Historic Philadelphia:

SIGHTSEEING BY SUNLIGHT:
History:

  • Once Upon A Nation – From Memorial Day through Labor Day, visitors can grab a map at the Independence Visitor Center and head off to hear funny, sad and inspirational stories about the people of Colonial Philadelphia told at 13 storytelling benches located throughout Historic Philadelphia. Those who collect a star at each bench receive a special storytelling certificate and coupon book.   • AudioWalk & Tour – At the Independence Visitor Center, visitors can pick up a portable CD player, a CD-ROM and map before embarking on a tour of 20 historic sites. 6th & Market Streets, (215) 965-7676, independencevisitorcenter.com
  • Colonial Kids’ Quest – When the Declaration of Independence goes missing, kids play detective as they follow this stroller-friendly walking tour to various landmarks. Independence Living History Center, 3rd & Chestnut Streets, (215) 629-4026, historicphiladelphia.org
  • The Constitutional Walking Tour of Philadelphia – Maps for this free, self-guided walking tour of more than 30 historic sites are available at area attractions and online. Guided, audio, group and cell phone tours are also available. 6th & Market Streets, (215) 525-1776, theconstitutional.com
  • GPS Ranger Tour – An easy-to-use GPS device guides visitors to 25 historic sites with images, video and interactive trivia to entertain them along the way. In addition to French, German, Italian and Spanish, Closed Caption and American Sign Language versions are also available.   • Quest for Freedom – Visitors who download the self-guided tour can explore the sites and discover the drama of the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia, which played an important role in anti-slavery activities. gophila.com/questforfreedom
  • Turmoil and Treason: The Path to Independence – Visitors side with Colonial rebels or the King’s loyalists during this walking tour during which 18th-century townspeople debate both sides of the issues.   • Tippler’s Tour – It is happy hour Colonial-style when the over-21 set sings along to 18th-century drinking songs, enjoys tales of 18th-century drinking traditions and samples a few beverages as they amble through Old City. This year, tipplers stop at Society Hill Restaurant, Triumph Brewing Company, National Mechanics and City Tavern.   • Lights of Liberty Show – Some of the nation’s most important historic treasures take center stage—literally—as larger-than-life images flash onto Independence Hall, Carpenters’ Hall, Franklin Court and other landmarks.   • Independence After Hours – After a feast at City Tavern, guests follow their guide to Independence Hall, where they meet the Founding Fathers in person and eavesdrop on their late-night debates.
