Survey Says: Stephen Hawking Is The Modern-Day Galileo

Hawking Ranks Above Al Gore, Al Roker And Captain Kirk In Survey To Help Galileo Exhibition Promoters Shape Marketing Message

The results are in: A sample group of 3,694 people completed a survey about the world’s most famous astronomer Galileo Galilei, and a stunning 50% of respondents said that physicist Stephen Hawking is the modern-day person who best embodies Galileo’s spirit and contributions. People were given a choice of Hawking, Al Gore, Al Roker, Steve Jobs and Captain Kirk—all of whom share common traits with the famous scientist. The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) and The Franklin Institute Science Museum conducted the survey to gain a better understanding of what people know about Galileo in order to help shape the marketing message for the Galileo, the Medici and the Age of Astronomy exhibition, making its exclusive world appearance at The Franklin through September 7.

Although Galileo would be nearly 450 years old today, more than 60% of those surveyed were at least somewhat familiar with the astronomer and his accomplishments. Here’s what else the survey revealed:

  • When asked what they first thought of when they heard the name Galileo, the consensus was overwhelmingly “astronomer” or “scientist.”
  • The surveyed respondents who indicated they would “probably” or “definitely” travel to Philadelphia specifically to see an exhibition about Galileo are slightly different than Philadelphia’s average overnight leisure tourist, with potential Galileo visitors skewing slightly older (average age 50) and wealthier (average annual household income $105,000).

Visitors who want to take their time to enjoy Galileo, the Medici and the Age of Astronomy and all Philadelphia has to offer can book the Galileo Hotel Package, which includes overnight accommodations and two tickets to the exhibition, at gophila.com/galileo.
