Six New Stores Not To Miss In Philly
Expanding Retail Scene Features Big-Name Giants Such As Barneys CO-OP And Only-in-Philly Boutiques
Philly’s diverse retail scene is growing thanks to big names such as Barneys CO-OP and Juicy Couture, along with indie boutiques such as Zahra Saeed and JimmyStyle. Here’s a look at six shops where locals and visitors are finding fab fashions, hit-of-the-party gifts, fragrant flowers and hard-to-resist homeware:
Fab Fashions:
- Barneys CO-OP – Style-savvy Philadelphians are rejoicing at the arrival of this beloved source of Vena Cava dresses, Rag & Bone button-downs and denim galore (Seven For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, Earnest Sewn, J Brand, Rogan, Current/Elliott and PRPS, among many others). In April 2009, noted Manhattan-based fashion emporium Barneys New York installed its slightly edgier, definitely more affordable sister store directly across the street from Rittenhouse Square. Barney New York is now the ground-floor resident of luxury condo complex 10 Rittenhouse, and it’s the 19th Barneys CO-OP store in the country. 10 Rittenhouse Square, (215) 563-5333, barneyscoop.com
- Zahra Saeed – This Pakistan-born designer debuted her bold, feminine collection of tailored tops, jackets with upturned collars, high-waisted pencil skirts, neutral-toned dresses and pristine tunics to rave reviews at the most recent Fashion Weeks in London and Paris. Saeed’s back story is nothing short of amazing: She immigrated to the U.S., left an arranged marriage, and, as a single mom, set out on a successful career in finance. In March, she installed a kudos-worthy collection in her first shop, an elegant space with a Rittenhouse Square address and adorned with chandeliers and ottomans. Look for Austrian, French and Italian fabrics, tulle-lined hems—and prices that are remarkably reasonable for this level of detailing. 1905 Walnut Street, (877) 204-1131, zahrasaeed.com
- Juicy Couture – This winter, carefree California-girl style came to Walnut Street in the form of this über-popular chain boutique. Established 13 years ago by best friends Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy, Juicy Couture arrived to Philly just in time for spring. One block from bustling Rittenhouse Square, the sunny shop sells its kicky sundresses, shorts, tunics and, yes, terry cloth wonder pants to teens, twenty-somethings and beyond. 1701 Walnut Street, (215) 569-3402, juicycouture.com
Homeware, Gifts, Blooms And More:
- Hello Home – Charming and exacting shop owner and interior decorator J. Lamancuso has spent the past several years running two locations of Hello World, Center City’s much-lauded shops for perfect, last-minute gifts, excellent home accents, irresistibly delicate jewelry and delightfully reworked vintage furnishings. In April, Lamancuso moved his Antiques Row location to a larger space a couple blocks east on Pine Street, and renamed the operation “Hello Home,” to emphasize an even stronger focus on shelter. Stocked with Trina Turk rugs, reconditioned mid-century modern furniture, vintage art, softly contemporary lighting and glassware, the new location has become an instant hit with nesters and collectors alike. 1004 Pine Street, (215) 545-5207, shophelloworld.com
- Beautiful Blooms Boutique – Florist Donna O’Brien has long wowed wedding parties, event planners, flower aficionados and even the notoriously exacting judges at the Pennsylvania Flower Show. Now, O’Brien is impressing walk-in clients with her first retail operation, a modern floral boutique on Liberties Walk in Northern Liberties. Opened in late March, Beautiful Blooms is modeled after the famous flower shops of London, offering a wide chalkboard menu’s worth of the day’s cut flowers (which can be hand-tied into bouquets), strikingly colorful vessels and vases, plus essential tools and tabletop touches such as candles and cards. For those who like to do it themselves, O’Brien plans to hold classes in floral arranging. For casual shoppers, she’s laid out a “flower bar,” where the shop will hold happy hours that result in the loveliest kind of buzz. 1021 N. 3rd Street, #102 and #103, (215) 925-3111, beautifulblooms.com
- JimmyStyle – Jimmy Contreras moved from a career in clothing—Kimberly Boutique, Nicole Miller—to a métier in shelter with his chic and pioneering South Philly shop just a short cab ride from Center City. Set along the up-and-coming corridor of East Passyunk Avenue, which stretches diagonally from South Broad Street to South Street, JimmyStyle features iconic and funky home accessories from Areaware and Jonathan Adler, essential candles by Votivo and Paddywax, locally made soaps from Duross & Langell and baby clothes from Trumpette, Kee-Ka Baby and Appaman Collection—making it the perfect stop for housewarmings and baby showers alike. 1820 E. Passyunk Avenue, (267) 257-5582, shopjimmystyle.com
