Mayor John F. Street and Sunoco Welcome America! Announce 2007 Festival

Mayor John F. Street and Sunoco Welcome America! President and CEO Clifton Davis today announced the 2007 Sunoco Welcome America! Festival. With this year’s theme, Celebrate Freedom, the festival will offer world-class patriotic and historic venues and will highlight the best in American music, food and fun from June 28th to July 4th.

“We are proud to be the home of a freedom celebration with a 15-year tradition of providing free family entertainment as we pause to remember the founding of our country,” said Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street. “I invite people from all over our region, nation and the world to come and celebrate with us as we showcase our City’s historical treasures and American traditions. The importance of this festival cannot be overstated for its economic impact on the region and its contribution to the City’s status as an exciting hospitality and tourism destination.”

From rock to funk, gospel to opera, salsa and jazz, popular city venues will rock with concerts and street fests amid the sweeping drama of America’s unforgettable beginnings and its historic fight for independence.

“For seven days, the Sunoco Welcome America! Festival will be a bold, joyous observance of America’s heritage and history,” said Davis, a seasoned actor, music composer and event producer. “The sounds of freedom are contained in the diversity of American musical genres available at this year’s festival; but we will also celebrate freedom with patriotic pride and passion.”

The “Best of” American Music
Throughout its 15 years, the Sunoco Welcome America! Festival has attracted top talent from every musical style. This summer, the main concert stages will feature a fusion of the best of American music. Performing for nearly one million people on July 4th is one of the most successful duos in rock history, Hall & Oates, who will headline the Sunoco Sweet Sounds of Liberty Concert. With eight number one hit singles and more than 60 million record albums sold, Daryl Hall and John Oates’ songbook spans the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s and includes ‘Do It For Love,’ ‘Rich Girl,’ ‘Kiss On My List,’ ‘Maneater,’ ‘Private Eyes,’ ‘I Can’t Go For That,’ ‘Sara Smile,’ ‘She’s Gone,’ and ‘One On One’.

On Saturday, June 30, the legendary and dynamic R & B diva, Chaka Khan, will dazzle audiences at Penn’s Landing along the Delaware River with her solid gold hits: ‘I’m Every Woman’, ‘Do You Love What You Feel’, ‘I feel for You,’ ‘Sweet Thing’, ‘Tell Me Something Good.’ Khan has a string of Grammy Awards dating back to 1974 through her most recent 2003 award for Best R&B Traditional Vocal.

On the Gospel stage, J Moss, one of the most powerful forces in contemporary Christian music, will inspire faithful fans of gospel on Friday, June 29. Moss has deep roots in Gospel music; he started singing with his father's popular group, Bill Moss and the Celestials, and his cousins, the Clark Sisters. Moss’ talents have put in him in the company of popular urban Gospel composers like Kurt Franklin (‘Stomp’). He blends traditional spiritual messages with modern arrangements and hip hop rhythms. His creativity has propelled ground breaking work with Trin-i-Tee 5:7, Hezekiah Walker and Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child, spreading the power of Gospel music to young urban audiences.

Adding to the spice of the popular Fiesta on the Parkway, the legendary beat of the Tito Puente, Jr. Orchestra will drive Latin music enthusiasts to their feet on Tuesday, July 3. The band is led by the son and namesake of Tito Puente Jr., one of the kings of Latin music. This generation’s Tito has found captive audiences who share his love for his father’s electrifying music. At the 2007 festival, the event will be renamed Fiesta Goya Salsa con Salsa for its new title sponsor, Goya Foods. Goya Foods is the largest Hispanic food company in the country and the first Hispanic owned multinational corporation to sponsor an event at Sunoco Welcome America!. The Fiesta Goya Salsa con Salsa line-up also features the 2005 Latin Grammy winner, Spanish Harlem Orchestra; 2005 Latin Grammy nominee Michael Stuart; and salsa master Adalberto Santiago.

All You Can Eat
A cornucopia of edible delights is infused into every Sunoco Welcome America! event, culminating with the return of Taste of Philadelphia on Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1. This event premiered last year, attracting thousands of local residents as well as tourists from around the world who flocked to the restaurant festival to chose a traditional Philadelphia staple—the cheese steak—or sample world class cuisine from the likes of Capital Grille, one of the city’s premiere restaurants. Taste is located in Independence National Park, one of the most frequently visited national monuments in the country—home of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

But getting a taste of Philadelphia is easy at the Sunoco Welcome America! Festival. From beginning to end, great food and entertainment are a winning combination at more than a dozen open air events. Just before the parade gets started on July 4th, visitors can find an assortment of summer treats as American as hotdogs and hamburgers straight off the grill washed down with a cool, refreshing bottle of Coke or a Philadelphia water ice. Hungry or thirsty, festival participants will find all they can eat or drink at any of the Sunoco Welcome America! venues.

Preserving Precious Freedoms/Living our History
The passion of the celebration is even more intense for Americans in the season that commemorates the hard won liberty for which this country is an icon in the international community. The Southwest Airlines July 4th parade puts patriotism on display as viewers watch and honor the men and women who pledge their lives to protect our freedom. Military units, Philadelphia Mummers, high school marching bands, drill teams and lively floats pass enthusiastic crowds wearing and waving their red, white and blue. The parade follows the Let Freedom Ring ceremony at the Liberty Bell, hosted by the Pennsylvania Sons of the Revolution. Let Freedom Ring is the centerpiece of the nation’s commemorative ceremony for the soldiers who have fought and sacrificed to preserve our heritage since 1776.

Philadelphia’s history brings the focus of the nation to our city during the Independence Day celebration. Throughout the festival, Philadelphia tells the story of the founding of our country. From the National Constitution Center to the Betsy Ross House, history comes to life through the Once Upon A Nation project. In the best American story telling tradition, colonial characters regale visitors with tales of the exploits and adventures of America’s early heroes. Kids will love a visit to the restored nineteenth-century fountain and carousel at the center of Franklin Square.

Whether it’s history or high energy entertainment, the Sunoco Welcome America! Festival has what it takes to make a great way to Celebrate Freedom this 4th of July.
