Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation Produces PSA Nominated For 2008 Mid-Atlantic Emmy®

Spots Highlighting Quest For Freedom During Black History Month Earn The Nod

The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) received a 2008 Mid-Atlantic Emmy® nomination in the Community/Public Service category for a series of public service announcements produced with CBS3, CW Philly and The African American Museum in Philadelphia. More than 1.5 million people watched the segments, which aired throughout Black History Month in February 2008. This is the first time GPTMC has received an Emmy® nomination. The winners will be announced this Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Philadelphia Marriott.

“Thanks to the work of our partners, this series of six 30-second spots raised awareness for Quest for Freedom, part of a statewide collaborative program connecting more than 20 historic sites throughout the area,” said Patricia Washington, vice president of cultural tourism, GPTMC.

The Emmy® nomination is a milestone for program partners and GPTMC, responsible for coordinating the Philadelphia portion of Quest for Freedom. The program serves as the eastern hub and anchor for Pennsylvania’s statewide Underground Railroad initiative. The collaboration enables Philadelphia to tell a richer, more complex story than any one site, institution or community can tell alone. Intended to complement (not compete with) the interpretive programs of all participating organizations, Quest for Freedom multiplies the effect of the many leading historical institutions throughout Philadelphia.

Each spot of the nominated series chronicles a story from the historic legacy of African-Americans in Philadelphia, and all are set to music produced by the homegrown hip-hop artist Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots. The series already won a coveted Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Award for Outstanding Public Service Announcement earlier this year. The regional Emmy® Awards recognize excellence in news, sports, programming, public service and individual achievement in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
