Gay Events Keep Philly Fab In 2009

The Region’s Lively Gay Scene Strikes A Pose All Year Long

Gay and lesbian travelers eager to get their “history straight” and “nightlife gay” will find an eclectic mix of fun and fabulous happenings in Philadelphia and The Countryside® throughout the year. Dance parties, drag shows, pride parades and cultural events are among the offerings for gay travelers in 2009. Here’s a look:

Fun Seven Days A Week:

  • Woody’s Bar is the quintessential gay hot spot in Philadelphia. With two sprawling floors, including a friendly downstairs bar and packed upstairs dance floor, there’s plenty of man-on-man action seven days a week. 202 S. 13th Street, (215) 545-1893, woodysbar.com
  • Every night at the Bike Stop, Philly’s premiere leather bar, means drinking, dancing and nonstop fun. Look for art openings and special events such as Macho City, a monthly disco dance party. 206 S. Quince Street, (215) 627-1662, thebikestop.com
  • For a more mellow night, try dinner and drinks at Knock, a newer “Gayborhood” spot serving up creative entrees and hosting special events like karaoke every Thursday. 225 S. 12th Street, (215) 925-1166, knockphilly.com
  • At Pure, an after-hours nightclub in the heart of the “Gayborhood,” the night—or morning—just starts to heat up around 2:00 a.m. when DJs break out their best tunes and the cocktails flow. 1221 Saint James Street, (215) 735-5772, purephilly.com
  • There’s plenty to keep visitors to Tavern on Camac entertained, including singing on the main floor, dining downstairs or dancing at the second-story nightclub. 243 S. Camac Street, (215) 545-0900, tavernoncamac.com
  • Bigger is better at Valanni ever since this gay-friendly bar and restaurant doubled its size. Mediterranean-inspired cuisine is served nightly, and special events like fashion shows, Quizzo, theme nights and live music round out the weekly offerings. 1229 Spruce Street, (215) 790-9694, valanni.com

Every Week Or Every Month:

  • Bob and Barbara’s Thursday night drag show is a Philly tradition. Here the finest kings and queens strut their stuff while the energetic crowd enjoys the “Philadelphia Special,” a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon and a shot of Jim Beam. 1509 South Street, (215) 545-4511
  • The galleries stay open late at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Friday nights for Art After 5, an evening of music, light cuisine and cocktails in the Great Stair Hall. 26th Street & the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, (215) 763-8100, philamuseum.org
  • Shaft Fridays at Shampoo means one thing: wall-to-wall men. The weekly dance parties feature internationally known DJs (like Junior Vasquez) and $3 drinks until 11:00 p.m. Downstairs resident DJ Maria V. spins her set late into the night. Willow Street between 7th & 8th Streets, (215) 922-7500, shampooonline.com
  • Every First Friday of the month, art galleries throughout Old City open their doors to show off new exhibitions and treat patrons to light refreshments. Check out works by famous and emerging artists in dozens of galleries before noshing at one of the neighborhood’s top-rated restaurants and outdoor cafes. (215) 625-9200, oldcityarts.org
  • DJ Robert Drake gets the New Wave party started every first Friday at Fluid Nightclub during Sex Dwarf. Other live DJ nights include Latin-infused Discoteca on Wednesdays and Psydde Delicious’ go-go party Fast, Cheap & Out of Control on the last Sunday of every month, as well as a steady stream of house and techno music. 613 S. 4th Street, (215) 629-3686, fluidnightclub.com
  • Gamble on a good cause at the AIDS Fund’s Gay Bingo, a monthly event hosted by comically charged drag queens at the Gershwin Y. 1227 Locust Street, (215) 731-9255, aidswalkphilly.org
