Fun Kicks Up In Philly After The Sun Sets

Live Music, Late-Night Nibbles, Loud Laughs And Games Galore Attract Festive Night Owls In Every Neighborhood Of The City

Philadelphians are cheering the arrival of Relish, one of the city’s newest culinary destinations where live jazz accompanies a light and modern Southern menu. Owners Benjamin and Robert Bynum give classic fried green tomatoes a dusting of parmesan, and braised turkey wings and collard greens meet apple cornbread stuffing in a space reminiscent of a 1950s club, thanks to acclaimed Philly designer Kia Steave-Dickerson of TLC’s “Trading Spaces” and “Renovate My Place.” While West Oak Lane is the city neighborhood lucky enough to claim Relish, there are plenty of options for a fantastic night out in many Philly neighborhoods.

Special Spinners/Don’t-Miss DJ Nights:

  • Hip-hop, funk, blues, soul and house music float through University City’s Bubble House Thursday through Sunday nights. Loose leaf teas and other libations accompany new chef Valentino Sandoval’s pan-Asian fusion menu tinged with Caribbean and Hispanic flavors. Sake and wine tastings round out the global menu. 3404 Sansom Street, (215) 243-0804, thebubblehouse.com
  • Part club and part diner, Silk City Diner hosts DJs King Britt, Dozia and Ron Clark for Back2Basics on Monday nights, featuring hip-hop, house, funk, dance and more. This classically silver dining car has attracted rave reviews from The New York Times and the Food Network’s Guy Fieri in an episode of “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives.” 435 Spring Garden Street, (215) 592-8838, silkcityphilly.com
  • Fluid’s weekly Tasty Treats party has been going strong for years, and with its rhythmic mix of hip-hop, reggae, house and R&B, there are no signs of stopping. Upstairs from the Latest Dish, resident DJs include Rich Medina and ?uestlove (when he’s in town) keep the party jumping. Plus, ladies get in free before 11:00 p.m. 613 S. 4th Street, (215) 629-3686, fluidnightclub.com
  • The three-year-old Walnut Room’s brown and cream interior evokes the effortlessly cool Rat Pack spirit with its swanky Rittenhouse address, dress code and bottle service offering. Saturday’s rotation of DJs includes DJ Skeme Richards of the Rock Steady Crew and DJ Statik, who breaks out funk, soul and hip-hop. 1709 Walnut Street, (215) 751-0201, walnutroomredux.com
  • Loie’s French doors allow a great view of those people walking the streets still looking for the party. After 10:00 p.m., DJ Benja Styles’ skillful mixes show why he’s worked with T-Pain, Swizz Beats and 50 Cent. 128 S. 19th Street, (215) 568-0808, loie215.com

Live Music:

  • Featuring such southern classics as shrimp and grits and gumbo, plus a broad rotation of Southern rhythm and blues acts, this signature Warmdaddy’s location near a movie theater makes it a perfect fit for date night. Meet local radio personalities throughout the week, whether for Wine Down Wednesdays, Friday After-Work Happy Hours or the Sunday morning Gospel Brunch. 1400 S. Columbus Boulevard, (215) 462-2000, warmdaddys.com
  • The brothers Bynum, who have defined Philly’s nightlife scene in a number of neighborhood venues, including Warmdaddy’s, have also brought their talents to North by Northwest, a well-loved, Art Deco-inspired storefront restaurant in Mount Airy complete with great fine dining and live entertainment. 7165 Germantown Avenue, (215) 248-1000, nxnwphl.com
  • Big talent continues to rock the small stage at Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus, a Northern Liberties legend dishing up Cajun fare and equally spicy notes. And don’t miss the separate bar menu offering seitan for the hippest of herbivores. 847 N. 3rd Street, (215) 922-1035, ortliebsjazzhaus.com
  • “Making new friends—one plate at a time” is the mantra at Holy Smoke, the new Roxborough barbecue joint that’s turning heads—and taste buds. Hickory, mesquite and red-oak smoke intertwines with secret family recipes and jazz and blues by house band Funkensoul Blues and various other acts. 473 Leverington Avenue, (215) 482-7500, holysmokephilly.com
  • Named one of Downbeat Magazine’s “100 Best Places in the World to Hear Jazz,” Chris’ Jazz Café serves up inexpensive lunches and dinners to accompany their equally inexpensive tickets to see the world’s greatest jazz acts. 1421 Sansom Street, (215) 568-3131, chrisjazzcafe.com

Late-night Eats:

  • Copabanana, known best as Copa, has an extensive list of gourmet burgers, including the jerky turkey burger, and toppings, among them mango chutney and wasabi mayo. The South Street address is the flagship location, but two additional spots throughout the city offer their own unique interpretations. The South Street and University City locations serve food until 12:30 a.m. every night but Sunday, and the Northeast Copa keeps the kitchen open until 1:00 a.m. on weekend nights. 4th & South Streets, (215) 238-1512; 40th & Spruce Streets, (215) 382-1330; 1619 Grant Avenue, (215) 969-1712, copabanana.com

  • Tequilas in search of stardom dream of becoming part of a Mexican Post margarita. Frozen, on the rocks, salt, no salt and in such flavors as watermelon and raspberry, nothing can steal the thunder of a Post’s ‘rita. The Old City location serves delicious beyond-the-border bites until 11:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday; 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday; and 12:00 midnight Friday and Saturday. The Love Park Post keeps the flames going until 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 104 Chestnut Street, (215) 923-5233; 1601 Cherry Street, (215) 568-2667, mexicanpost.com
