Fact Sheet: Philly At-A-Glance

  • The second largest city on the East Coast, Philadelphia is the sixth largest city in the United States, with a population of 1.4 million in Philadelphia and 3.9 million people residing in the five-county region.
  • Thanks to founder William Penn, Philadelphia’s Center City follows an easy-to-navigate grid street design. The best ways to get around Center City are by foot, taxi or public transportation. The city’s lush and historic countryside is home to many areas of interest, including Valley Forge National Historical Park, Longwood Gardens, the Brandywine River Museum, the King of Prussia Mall, Chaddsford Winery and more. The farthest attraction is about one hour by car.
  • Among the “firsts” in the U.S. established in Philadelphia: the first hospital, the first medical school, the first stock exchange, the first mint, the first theater, the first art museum and school, the first protests against slavery, the first zoo, the first department store and the first computer.
  • The region’s hotspots for cultural and historical sightseeing include the Liberty Bell Center, Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center, Valley Forge National Historical Park, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Franklin Institute, the Walnut Street Theatre, the Rodin Museum and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Philadelphia is also the mural capital of the country with more than 3,000 outdoor and indoor murals throughout the city.
  • From trendy boutiques in Old City and Northern Liberties and upscale shops in Rittenhouse Square to the outlet stores of Franklin Mills and major malls like King of Prussia Mall, Philadelphia and The Countryside® satisfies shoppers of all tastes and budgets. And with no sales tax on clothing, the temptation to shop here is irresistible.
  • Although Philadelphia’s most famous dish may still be the cheesesteak, the city has become a leading destination for fine dining. Internationally celebrated restaurateurs include Stephen Starr (Alma de Cuba, Barclay Prime, Buddakan, Continental Restaurant and Martini Bar, Parc Brasserie, Pod and more), Georges Perrier (Le Bec-Fin and georges’), Marc Vetri (Vetri and Osteria) and Jose Garces (Amada, Chifa, Distrito, Tinto and Village Whiskey).
  • From historically charming (Sheraton Society Hill) to ultra hip (Aloft Philadelphia Airport and Hotel Palomar Philadelphia) to sophisticated elegance (Sofitel Philadelphia), the Philadelphia region features hotels for all tastes. Three of the city’s hotels consistently earn the prestigious AAA Five Diamond rating: Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia (25 consecutive years), The Rittenhouse Hotel (18 consecutive years) and The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia (nine consecutive years).
  • In February 2009, the immensely popular Philly Overnight® Hotel Package, a two-night deal that includes free parking and a gift at check-in, reached an incredible milestone: 100,000 packages sold, accounting for 200,000 room nights and $20 million in hotel revenue. The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation created the package in 2001 to boost tourism in Philadelphia after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
  • In the richly historic Philadelphia region, William Penn’s horticultural legacy is celebrated and perpetuated at dozens of wonderful historic estates, arboreta, display gardens, college campuses and parks. With some of the nation’s best history and horticulture, Center City and the region exemplify Penn’s vision for a “greene countrie town.” Major attractions include Longwood Gardens, Morris Arboretum, Chanticleer, Japanese House and Garden, Tyler Arboretum and Fairmount Park, the nation’s largest landscaped city park.
  • Philadelphia has eight major professional sports teams: the Phillies (Major League Baseball), the Eagles (National Football League), the Flyers (National Hockey League), the 76ers (National Basketball Association), the Phantoms (American Hockey League), the KiXX (Major Indoor Soccer League), the Wings (National Lacrosse League) and now the Union (Major League Soccer). Philadelphia is also home to the new 18,500-seat Chester Stadium, where the men’s and women’s soccer teams will debut in 2010.
  • With 360,000 students and 80 regional colleges and universities, Philadelphia is a top destination for higher learning and a vibrant student life. In fact, one out of every six doctors in the country trained in Philadelphia.

The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) makes Philadelphia and The Countryside® a premier destination through marketing and image building that increases business and promotes the region’s vitality.
