Philly 360˚™ Creative Ambassadors

In summer 2009, the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) debuted a new twist on its African-American tourism marketing campaign. The initiative focuses on expanding the destination’s current visitor base by attracting a new group of African-American travelers who are younger, technologically savvy and driven to an urban destination based on its contemporary cultural offerings, vibrant nightlife scene and overall buzz factor.

Helping to shape the campaign is the Philly 360˚™ Coalition—a name that reflects the group’s commitment to giving potential visitors a 360˚ view of the city’s modern and historic tourism offerings. Here is a look at the African-American tastemakers and cultural trendsetters promoting a progressive image of Philadelphia and encouraging more people to visit the city in the campaign’s first year:

  • The Roots (Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, Tarik “Black Thought” Trotter, Kirk “Captain Kirk” Douglas, Frank “Knuckles” Walker, Owen Biddle, Damon “Tuba Gooding Jr.”
  • Bryson and James Kamal Gray) – Grammy® Award-winning hip-hop group, house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Philadelphia’s honorary creative ambassadors for 2009
  • King Britt – International producer and CEO of Five Six Media
  • Marc Byers – Music executive, entrepreneur and founder of Rockstar Entertainment
  • Ethel Cee – Hip-hop artist
  • Rah Crawford – Visual artist and founder of NPIC-Art™
  • Maori Karmael Holmes – Filmmaker and founder of Black Lily Film & Music Festival
  • Rich Medina – World-renowned DJ, poet and producer
  • Syreeta Scott – Owner and celebrity stylist at Duafe Holistic Hair Care
  • Bela Shehu – Fashion and jewelry designer and owner of agony by bela shehu
  • Tayyib Smith – Founding publisher of two.one.five magazine and founder of Little Giant Media, Inc.
  • Stacey Wilson – Visual artist, graphic designer, owner of Flygirrl and owner and co-creator of Squarebiz
