Behind The Scenes At Sunoco Welcome America!, Philly’s Fourth of July Festival

Fireworks:

  • Each minute of a fireworks show takes approximately one hour to choreograph.
  • Zambelli pyrotechnicians will spend approximately 350-400 hours on-site producing Sunoco Welcome America!’s fireworks shows on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and at Penn’s Landing.

The Wedding: Benjamin Franklin & Betsy Ross (Ralph & Linda):

  • Ralph Archbold shares the same birthday, January 17, as the man he portrays, Benjamin Franklin.
  • Ralph and Linda first met at the wedding of Linda’s friend on September 1, the same date that Ben married Deborah Read.
  • Benjamin Franklin was a frequent guest at the City Tavern, site of Linda and Ralph’s wedding reception.

Super Scooper All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Festival:

  • In the nine years since it started, the Josh Kahan Fund’s all-you-can-eat events have raised more than $600,000 to benefit pediatric leukemia research.

Go 4th & Learn:

  • More than 1,000 books will be distributed to children through this year’s Go 4th & Learn.

Strongman Competition:

  • The weight of a concrete cylinder ranges from 180-330 pounds per hand. That’s equivalent to holding the yoke of the Liberty Bell in each hand.

Philly @ the Movies:

  • The Rocky statue is located at the foot of Eakins Oval, next to the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps. You can also find bronze footprints atop the museum steps indicating the spot where Rocky completed his arm-pumping training runs.
  • The Rocky statue can also be seen in Rocky III, Rocky IV, Trading Places, Mannequin, and Philadelphia.

Wednesday Night Out:

  • The Walk of Fame has 106 bronze plaques that bear the name of early Philadelphia jazz, blues, gospel, rock, pop and hip-hop artists.

Cops and Kids: Turning the Corner:

  • If lined up side-by-side, Philadelphia’s 2,800 murals would stretch out over 20 miles.
  • The average mural requires 25 gallons of paint at a cost of $60 per gallon.
  • Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s daughter Olivia appears in a mural on the Spring Garden Bridge entitled Mantua Stars by Shira Walinsky.

POPS on Independence:

  • Peter Nero composed and performed the musical score for the major motion picture Sunday in New York. His score for the movie was nominated for both a Golden Globe and Hollywood Reporter Award.
  • In his career, Peter has won two Grammy awards, garnered 10 additional nominations and released 67 albums.

Happy Birthday America!:

  • The Independence Visitor Center is approximately 50,000-square-feet long—that’s two city blocks long. It’s about the same size as 42 Colonial homes on Elfreth’s Alley.

Let Freedom Ring:

  • The Liberty Bell was first known as “The State House Bell.” It wasn’t until 1839 when the name was changed.
  • The Liberty Bell originally weighed 2,080 pounds, and it’s made mostly of bronze and copper.

Sweet Sounds of Liberty Concert & Fireworks:

  • John Legend attended the University of Pennsylvania where he headed Counterparts, a coed jazz and pop a cappella group.

Waterfront Concert & Festival:

  • Penn’s Landing hosts more than 70 events, festivals and other recreational activities throughout the year.
  • Boyz II Men’s debut album Cooleyhighharmony hung on the Billboard Top 200 for 133 weeks.
