So Much To Do For Any Kind Of Trip

Art lovers, garden enthusiasts, film connoisseurs and sports fans keep coming back year after year for festivals, sporting events, art shows, parades and cultural events in Philadelphia. Here’s what’s going on in the region in 2009:

January 2009:

  • Thousands of decorative strutters kick off the New Year by marching up Broad Street in the festive day-long Mummers Parade that ends with the Fancy Brigade Finale at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. January 1, 2009. phillymummers.com
  • Making its world debut in Philadelphia, America I AM: The African American Imprint celebrates African-American contributions across 400 years of American history at the National Constitution Center. The national touring exhibition features more than 150 artifacts, including the typewriter Alex Haley used to write Roots and Muhammad Ali’s boxing gloves. January 15-May 3, 2009. February 2009:

  • On view only at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cézanne and Beyond features 40 paintings and 20 watercolors and drawings by Cézanne. These are displayed alongside works by several artists for whom Cézanne has been a central inspiration and whose work reflects Cézanne’s extraordinary legacy, including Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. March 2009:

  • The Pennsylvania Convention Center is the site of the Philadelphia Flower Show, the oldest and largest indoor show of its kind. The annual gardening celebration features top-of-the-line horticulture and landscape design, entertainment and more than 150 vendors. April 2009:

  • The Franklin Institute Science Museum is the only stop in the world for Galileo, The Medici and The Age of Astronomy, a special exhibition that explores the contributions of Galileo, as well as that of other luminaries during the age of the Medicis. May 2009:

July 2009:

October 2009:

  • More than 150 teams race fiberglass dragon boats, complete with heads and tails, on a 500-meter course on the Schuylkill River during the Philadelphia International Dragon Boat Festival.   • Taking place at various venues throughout the city, the eighth annual First Person Festival of Memoir and Documentary Art is the only event in the nation dedicated to art based on real-life experiences.
