Cliveden of the National Trust
Home to the influential Chew family and the site of the 1777 Battle of Germantown, Cliveden represents a dark time in the struggle for freedom for the country’s enslaved people. Benjamin Chew was one of the largest owners of enslaved Africans in the Mid-Atlantic region, and his belongings shed light on life on Northern plantations.
